So When Did This Tea Party Thing Turn Into A Conservative Vs Liberal Issue

i always thought it was about being an american and it was started as a bipartisan type thing. but it seems like its now turned into another pissing match between conservatives and liberals. so what happend? is the media to blame for putting a conservative twist on it?
